Who We Are
San Juan Back Country Horsemen is a boots (and hooves)-on-the-ground volunteer group. We spend much of our time clearing and maintaining trails in the Weminuche Wilderness Area—the largest in Colorado—and in the South San Juan Wilderness. Our horses and mules get us and our tools deep into the backcountry. We also help pack in supplies for trail crews who are camped out for days at a time working on backcountry trails. We partner with the U.S. Forest Service on needed work on our invaluable national forest lands.
We are affiliated with the national Back Country Horsemen of America, and we advocate for the tradition, heritage and culture of public lands. We promote wise use of the backcountry and preserving access for stock users.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our fundraising efforts support clearing and maintaining backcountry trails and our priceless public lands.
