About Us

We Work Hard, But We Also Have Fun!

San Juan Back Country Horsemen is open to everyone. You don’t even need a horse—just a willingness to help keep our backcountry trails open, accessible and maintained. Members pitch in to saw downed trees, improve trail tread, remove trash from abandoned campsites, prep and install backcountry signs, pack in supplies to trail crews, improve trailheads, remove noxious weeds…and more. We also are involved in activities that invite participation by youth, such as cleanups on nearby public lands, on National Trails Day and on National Public Lands Day.

We are not a riding club. However, we like to reap the benefit of cleared trails by exploring on horseback the public lands and wilderness in our back yard. So, there are opportunities for members to ride together to learn the trails in the area and to enjoy the camaraderie of San Juan Back Country Horsemen. We also participate in the annual Fourth of July parade in Pagosa Springs and have ridden in the Durango Cowboy Parade. Members also organize and sponsor enjoyable gatherings during the year, including a summer barbecue and Christmas party.
